Agriculture is one of the principal occupational sources in the union territory of dadra and nagar haveli. Lying in the agro-climatic zone of Gujarat, around 21,115 hectares of land in the union territory are under cultivation which provides sustenance to the greater part of the natives. The main crops that grow here are paddy, ragi, small millets and pulses. The agriculture production depends primarily on the monsoon and mostly on a single crop system. Apart from these main crops, some other crops such as Jowar, oilseeds wheat, tuvr and sugarcane are also grown. The types of vegetables that are grown in the arable lands are cabbage, tomato, brinjal and cauliflower etc. A part of the arable land is used to grow fruits like mango, chikoo, guava and coconut. Agriculture in Dadra & Nagar Haveli accounts for almost 76.37 percent of the total employment out of which 89.36 percent belong to the tribal population. The government is bringing out several schemes intended to reduce the dependency on agriculture in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and to foster industrial growth in the region. The farmers of Dadra and Nagar Haveli still rely on the the traditional and primitive method of farming and there is very little technological advancement. To obviate the plight of the farmers the government has implemented schemes to offer wheat threshers, tractors and the power mills to the farmers at subsidized rates. Some more initiatives undertaken by the agricultural department to increase the agricultural productivity of Dadra and Nagar Haveli include distribution of pesticides and insecticides, use of fertilizers, establishing soil testing laboratories, promoting the use of High Yielding Variety seeds, training the farmers and making the electric pumps and pipes available to the farmers.
Animal husbandry is a major contributor in the economy of the union territory of Dada & Nagar Haveli. The livestock population of the union territory comprises of buffaloes, goats, cattle, sheep, and other animals. For veterinary services there is a sophisticated veterinary Hospital at Silvassa along with a couple of other veterinary centers at Dapada and Khanvel. In order to fulfill the requirements of poultry birds and to demonstrate better and improved methods of poultry keeping, the government is running a poultry breeding-cum-demonstration farm.
There are total four industrial estates in the territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The co-operative industrial estate is at Silvassa and the three of the government estates are one each at Khadoli, Masat and Silvassa. The economy of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli has been immensely boosted by the emergence of manufacturing industries in the region. Though its economy is primarily agriculture based, it has only a few industries that participate in the manufacturing activities. Several small scale and cottage industries have sprouted in the region. Some of these small industries derive their resources from the forests which are there in abundance in the region of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. A small industry has been established to produce Katha in the region which is manufactured from the khair wood in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The items produced by the Manufacturing industries in Dadra and Nagar Haveli include the production of chemicals, silk fabrics, electrical fixtures, spectacle frames, detergent powders, watches and flooring tiles. The forest products manufactured in Dadra and Nagar Haveli are exported to foreign countries which earns foreign currency for the country. The items that are exported include forest products, rubber foam etc. The imported items are petroleum, cloth and sugar.
Forestry is also a major contributor to the economic development of Dadra & Nagar Haveli which earns good revenue from the forest products. The total area in the union territory covered by forests is around 20852 hectares which is around 43% of the total geographical area. The various kinds of woods that can be found in these forests are sadra, teak, sisam, khair and mahara etc. The area of the forest is spread across 58 villages. The teak and khair are the most predominant species available in this territory.
The economy of the union territory is flourishing. With is fertile soils and vast expanse of forests which coves around 40% the land this region has a progressive economy. Though there are no major industries in the region but the medium scale industries thriving in the region are giving the economy a great boost.
